StereoLithography Apparatus

StereoLithography Appratus (SLA) is the device that is used to create StereoLithography parts. These devices were developed and put in use in the late 80’s. The SLA equipment was a little ahead of it’s time as CAD design was still mostly done in 2-D. The StereoLithography Appratus requires a 3-D computer file. 3-D CAD software wasn’t the standard for design until the mid 90’s. Much of protoCAD’s early work in the early 90’s was creating 3-D CAD files for our customers so that they could have a StereoLithography part built.

protoCAD builds StereoLithography parts on 3D Systems SLA 3500 and SLA 5000. There is a variety of materials that can be built with these systems.

STEP 1: CREATE 3-D CAD MODEL
A 3-D CAD model provides the data for the SLA machine to create the rapid prototype.

STEP 2: CREATE STL FILE
An STL file is required to build the rapid prototype and is exported by most 3-D CAD software.

STEP 3: PREPARE BUILD FILE
The STL file is oriented and placed in the desired build location on the StereoLithography Apparatus (SLA) platform. Supports are generated for over hanging surfaces and attachment to the platform. The build file is sliced into layers and exported to the SLA.

STEP 4: BUILD GEOMETRY
In the StereoLithography Apparatus (SLA), a laser beam scans a single cross section onto a vat of resin. The laser solidifies the resin into thin, highly accurate layers. The process is repeated until the rapid prototype is complete.

STEP 5: CLEAN AND POSTCURE
The rapid prototype is removed from the SLA machine. The residual resin is stripped off, the supports are broken away, and the part is post-cured.

STEP 6: FINISH PROTOTYPE
The rapid prototype is sanded to remove any layer steps. If required, the prototype can be painted, polished, textured, assembled, and inserts/helicoils can be added.
